Super Stars Literacy 8/2010 - Super Stars Literacy was established in 2002 as a project of the Junior League of Oakland-East Bay. The program was the result of two years of community wide needs assessments, research, and collaborative program development with the Oakland Unified School District and several key community based organizations. Super Stars Literacy exists to build early literacy skills in primary grade students attending schools in underserved neighborhoods. The organization provides K-2nd grade students with a 3-year after-school program designed to nurture academic skills, encourage potential, and reduce the risk of academic failure in later grades.
In March 2010, The Stocker Foundation awarded $10,000 toward Super Star Literacy (SSL) program supplies for five sites, serving Title 1 schools (Hoover, Parker, and East Oakland elementary schools and Think College Now and International Community charter schools) in the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD). SSL works with the same group of students every day after school for the entire school year. They offer intensive literacy instruction in combination with social/behavioral skill development. SSL designs an individualized plan for each student that is linked back to classroom curriculum across core subject areas.
SSL served 210 unduplicated students (85% were eligible to participate in the Federal Free and Reduced Price Lunch Program) of which 82% improved by at least one literacy skill level (as measured by the DIBELS assessment) or reached grade level benchmarks. Remarkably, 100% of kindergarten students either improved by at least one level or reached grade level benchmarks.
