Mission Learning Center
8/2010 - Located in the Mission District of San Francisco, the Mission Learning Center was established in 1972 as a summer reading program serving 50 students. Thirty-six years later, Mission Learning Center continues to grow, offering a variety of programs to meet the literacy needs of the community including afterschool literacy and summer reading programs.
In March 2010, The Stocker Foundation awarded $10,000 to Mission Learning Center toward the operation of two afterschool program sites. The first program took place at Leonard Flynn Elementary School which is among the lowest performing schools in San Francisco’s Unified School District. The second afterschool literacy program took place at Centro del Pueblo and was open to any elementary student in San Francisco who is not yet reaching at his or her full potential.
Both of the Mission Learning Center’s afterschool programs offer a chance for students to receive the individualized attention that is not possible during the regular school day. As a result, children in the programs advance on average two grade levels in just seven short months.
Mission Learning Center is devoted to promoting a life-long passion for learning through literacy and providing children with the means to a higher quality of life.
