America SCORES Cleveland
8/2010 – America SCORES is a nationwide organization committed to empowering students in urban communities using a combination of soccer, writing, creative expression, and service learning. America SCORES Cleveland (ASC) was established in 2004 to inspire third through fifth grade girls and boys to not only lead healthy lifestyles, but become agents of change in their communities.
In March 2010, The Stocker Foundation awarded $20,000 toward America SCORES Cleveland’s health and literacy afterschool program. To be on the soccer team, students must attend literacy workshops twice a week after school. The Poet-Athletes of ASC engage in creative writing lessons that focus on poetry and language enrichment. The students perform their original works at ASC’s annual Poetry SLAM! in front of their friends and families.
The program combines creativity with physical activity to provide students with a fun alternative to spending their after school time on the streets.
“The reason I like poetry is because it helps express my feelings and thoughts,” one Poet-Athlete remarked, “And the reason I like SCORES is because it keeps me out of trouble.”
In addition, the 16 soccer teams of ASC participated in a wide array of service-learning projects including food collection, creating care packages for nursing homes, and beautifying their schools with clean-up initiatives. America SCORES Cleveland has joined teamwork with creative expression to inspire a new generation of leaders in the community.
