The Stocker Foundation Awards Grants in Seven Communities across the United States
| |   | America Scores – Cleveland: $10,000 toward an afterschool health and literacy program at eight under-performing elementary schools in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District
Avon Local Schools: $10,000 toward Students to Achieve Reading Success (STARS), an intensive afterschool reading intervention program for disadvantaged K-5th grade students using the Wilson Fundations system
Boys & Girls Clubs of Lorain County: $50,000 toward Project Learn, a comprehensive afterschool program strategy designed to enhance literacy as well as core academic outcomes for disadvantaged students age 6-12
Cleveland Reads: $10,000 toward Prime Time for Book Buddies, an afterschool program that pairs high school students with elementary students for one-on-one literacy tutoring throughout the school year; a collaborative with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lorain County
Direct Action for Central Lorain: $21,150 toward small group afterschool and summer literacy tutoring (via implementation of the Leap Track System) and toward the First Book and First Day of School programs
Easter Seals Northern Ohio: $20,350 toward the implementation of Building Blocks for Literacy, a program that works to prevent or remediate language and literacy difficulties so students can succeed in school and life
Elyria City Schools: $104,085 toward the district-wide implementation of Wilson Fundations reading intervention program in all kindergarten, first and second grade classrooms during the 2010-2011 school year
Grafton-Midview Public Library: $7,700 toward the implementation of Kindergarten Kick-Off (no-cost literacy assessments and take-home readiness kits) and toward the 2010 Children’s Summer Reading Program (June 14 – July 9)
Herrick Memorial Library: $14,185 toward the distribution of Kindergarten Readiness and Literacy Kits and toward the 2010 Children’s Summer Reading Program (June 21 – July 30)
Literacy Cooperative: $50,000 toward the implementation of a county-wide school readiness initiative using the SPARK (Supporting Partnerships to Assure Ready Kids) model; hiring of a Parent Partner
Lorain County Urban League: $75,000 toward the expansion of the year-round Read and Rise early literacy intervention program, serving students in Lorain, Elyria, and Oberlin (staffing and instructional materials)
Lorain Public Library System: $40,350 toward the 2010 Children’s Summer Reading Program, Making Waves @ Your Library (June 7 – August 7), helping to lessen the “summer reading slide”
Lorain United Methodist Ministries: $11,250 toward Camp IDEAS, a summer academic enrichment program for students with special needs (July 5-30); staff salaries
Oberlin City School District: $28,668 toward KinderCamp (summer program promoting school readiness); America Reads (one-on-one literacy tutoring); and Read at Home and Book Buddies (book distribution and parent coaching programs that encourage K-1st grade Eastwood Elementary School students to read outside of the classroom)
Plain Dealer Newspaper in Education Program: $5,000 toward the distribution of 45,000 newspapers to 81 elementary schools in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District during the final months of the 2009-2010 school year
Roots of American Music: $9,000 toward One World Rhythm, an in-school literacy enrichment residency created for older elementary students struggling with basic reading and language arts skills at Lorain’s Toni Morrison Elementary School during the 2010-2011 school year
Prevent Blindness Ohio – Northeast Chapter: $5,000 toward Star Pupils, a vision screening, education, and eyeglass distribution program benefiting economically disadvantaged preschool and elementary-aged children in Lorain and Cuyahoga counties
Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio: $30,000 toward the continuation of the BackPack Program, providing kid-friendly nutritious food for children at-risk for hunger over the weekends and holidays during the school year
Soul to Sole: $10,000 ($5,000 outright and $5,000 1:1 challenge) toward the distribution of new athletic sneakers for economically disadvantaged elementary students throughout the Lorain and Elyria public schools
Young Audiences of Northeast Ohio: $15,000 toward the continuation of standards-based residencies using the PBS television series Between the Lions (K-2) and award-winning books for older elementary students that focuses on the development of reading and writing skills as well as promoting reading both inside and outside of the classroom (Lorain City Schools)
