The Stocker Foundation Awards Grants in eight Communities across the United States
| |   | LORAIN, OH (July 29, 2008) — The board of The Stocker Foundation approved 46 grants totaling $571,350 to support programs in the areas of arts and culture; community needs; education; health; social services; and women’s issues. Twenty-one grants totaling $258,850 were approved to benefit Northeast Ohio (Lorain and Cuyahoga counties). For more information, consult, www.stockerfoundation.org. The next grant submission deadline is August 15, 2008. Grant awards benefiting the region include:
Art House: $7,500 toward fine arts programming and cultural opportunities to benefit individuals and families living in Cleveland’s underserved Old Brooklyn/Brooklyn Centre neighborhood
City Club of Cleveland: $1,500 toward the participation of Lorain County’s high school students in the Youth Forum Series
Cleveland Hearing & Speech Center: $17,200 toward community services for the deaf and hard of hearing in Lorain County
Community Foundation of Lorain County: $25,000 toward HealthCare Lorain County, an initiative designed to create and nurture a coalition of community leaders that will take ownership over local healthcare issues in Lorain County, assess problems related to access and appropriate use of health care resources in the county, identify one or more goals to address the problems, and craft strategies to address these goals
Community Impact Organization: $20,000 toward the continuation of Campus Impact Character Education and Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, school-based initiatives designed to prevent or reduce bullying in elementary, middle, and junior high schools
Firelands Association for the Visual Arts: $15,000 toward general operations that will support the organization’s annual exhibitions, education, and outreach programs
Free Medical Clinic of Greater Cleveland: $10,000 toward the daytime dental clinic that is dedicated to preventative and restorative care for uninsured/underinsured populations Interfaith Hospitality Network of Greater Cleveland: $9,250 toward the Homeless Guest Support Project, which marshals the time and talent of the organization’s volunteers to provide specialized support to homeless families
MAD Factory: $15,000 toward instruction costs for on-site and outreach programming, student scholarships, and program supplies for classes and camps
Merrick House: $10,000 toward Tremont Urban Food System (TUFS), an organic gardening project, providing a first paid job experience for economically disadvantaged urban youth
Midview Local School District: $8,400 toward the purchase of interactive Student Response Systems (SRS) that will increase classroom learning and academic achievement among elementary school students within the district
Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland: $5,000 toward the School-to-Museum Program, providing quality arts education via free, docent led tours for economically disadvantaged students in K-12th grade
Oberlin Choristers: $10,000 continued support of staffing, music acquisition, and student scholarships
Our Lady of the Wayside: $15,000 toward Nursing/Healthcare for residents in Lorain County facilities
Pass it On Outreach, Inc.: $5,000 toward a Choice Food Pantry that served residents on the eastside of Lorain (purchase of a commercial refrigerator, shelving, food, pantry supplies, office supplies, and a photocopier)
Prevent Blindness Ohio—Northeast Ohio Chapter: $5,000 continued support of Vision Care Outreach in Lorain County, providing free , comprehensive, professional eye exams, follow-up care, education, and eyewear to medically indigent children, youth, and families as well as homeless and uninsured adults
Roots of American Music: $15,000 toward the implementation of Walking to the Western Reserve, an in-school assembly and residency program designed to help underserved and economically disadvantaged public elementary school students trace the historical development of Ohio’s earliest settlers
Salvation Army -- Elyria: $20,000 toward Life Skills programming for at-risk youth teaching cooking, menu planning, budgeting, laundry, filling out job applications, computer skills, independent living, and other “survival” skills as well as offering other homework help
Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio: $15,000 toward the development of a strategic plan encompassing the years 2009-2013, allowing the organization to distribute more food to hungry individuals and families throughout its service area
South Lorain Community Development Corporation: $20,000 toward a Community Development Initiative for the Pearl Avenue Corridor (commercial redevelopment of nearly 6,500 square feet, the rehab of two homes, and construction of two new homes)
Veggie U: $10,000 in continued support of Earth to Table, a program that promotes healthy eating habits and knowledge of plant science among 4th grade students (new and refill classroom kits for the 2008-09 school year)
