The Stocker Foundation Awards Grants in Seven
Communities across the United States
 
LORAIN, OH (April 1, 2009)— The Board of The Stocker Foundation met on March 28, 2009 and approved 65 transition grants totaling $2,607,454 to support programs in the areas of arts and culture; community needs; education; health; social services; and women’s issues. Thirty-six transition grants totaling $1,303,726 will directly benefit Northeast Ohio (Lorain and Cuyahoga counties). Beginning in 2010, the Foundation will narrow its competitive grantmaking focus to public education (K-5th grade). Those interested are encouraged to check the website www.stockerfoundation.org. during upcoming months for more information. Grant awards benefiting the region include:

Alzheimer's Association - Cleveland Area Chapter: $10,000 toward the continuation of vital programs and services (e.g., Helpline and Care Consultation) offered by the Western Region satellite office located in Lorain County (Avon)

American Red Cross - Lorain County Chapter: $100,000 toward the Disaster Relief Program, which provides immediate emergency services to persons made homeless by disaster

Black River Historical Society: $25,000 toward strategic planning activities and staffing that will help to create an appreciation for and knowledge of the history of the City of Lorain

Boy Scouts of America - Heart of Ohio Council: $50,000 toward the establishment of an endowment to support Lorain County Scoutreach and Learning for Life programming

The Center for Leadership in Education: $25,000 toward implementation of Universal Design for Leadership (UDL) in North Ridgeville City Schools and improved website functionality

Child Care Resource Center: $25,000 toward professional development, conducted via E-Learning Solutions, a system that will allow the organization to host facilitated, interactive group meetings and/or create, manage, and deliver customized training sessions or a suite of courses

The City Club of Cleveland: $3,000 toward the attendance of Lorain County high school students at the the Youth Forum Series, an interactive program that allows youth to select topics/speakers, manage logistics, and become involved in meaningful dialogue about civic affairs

Cleveland Hearing & Speech Center: $50,000 toward an endowment for Community Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing of Lorain County, which provides interpreting services, non-clinical case management, outreach, advocacy, and information & referral services to deaf and hard of hearing persons

Community Health Partners: $25,000 toward salary support for social work staff at the Center for Body, Mind & Spirit, which provides complementary therapies addressing the spiritual, psychological, emotional, and social needs of persons touched by cancer

Community Impact Organization: $50,000 general operating support for Campus Impact Character Education and Olweus Bullying Prevention programming in underserved public schools in Lorain County

Echoing Hills Village, Inc.: $75,000 toward capital improvements (e.g., carpeting, new living room sofas, and bedroom furnishings) at the seven Lorain County Echoing Lake facilities, serving 56 physically and/or mentally disabled adults

El Centro de Servicios Sociales, Inc.: $60,000 toward a capital campaign that will allow the organization to renovate and relocate into an existing facility that will provide much needed space for collaborative community-based programming

Elyria Club of Negro Business and Professional Women: $5,000 toward the Systematic Lupus Erythematosus Self Help (SLESH) program, which helps newly diagnosed patients learn to cope and live with lupus

Far West Center: $25,000 to establish a safety net fund to help client’s combat barriers to attending therapy, including, but not limited to translation services and transportation

Fund for Our Economic Future: $100,000 in support of Phase 3 (2010-2012) transformational grantmaking toward economic revitalization for Northeast Ohio

Greater Cleveland Habitat for Humanity: $16,075 toward a multi-media campaign for the ReStore program, which provides recycled building materials and tools for both routine home maintenance and major rehabilitation/repair

Helping Hands Feeding Foundation (Mt. Nebo Primitive Baptist Church): $30,000 toward the Hot Meal & Choice Food Pantry programs serving homeless and low-income residents of Elyria, Lorain, and Oberlin through a monthly congregate meal and a bi-weekly food box distribution

Ideas Unleashed: $15,000 toward the hiring of college-aged students to provide other nonprofits with the tools and support they need to communicate and collaborate using Web 2.0 technology (i.e., making use of social software in their respective work environments)

Leadership Lorain County: $50,000 in support of scholarships that will allow individuals employed by nonprofit organizations to participate in the 9-month Leadership Program and toward staffing and expenses related to the organization’s upcoming 25th Anniversary

Linking Employment, Abilities & Potential (LEAP): $50,000 toward restructuring the organization and its services to streamline, sustain, and maintain services in Lorain

Lorain County Free Clinic, Inc.: $60,000 toward the Prescription Drug Program, providing necessary medications and services to an expanding base of uninsured adults

Lorain County Health & Dentistry: $54,379 toward Year One implementation of the Technology Improvement Plan, including the purchase and installation of a new time and attendance system and a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP)

MAD Factory: $30,000 toward staffing that supports the delivery of exceptional theater arts programming as well as student scholarships for low-income or underserved children and youth

The Nord Center: $25,000 toward the Kidz First Children's Advocacy Center, which provides intervention, assessment, and support services for abused children ages 0-13 years

Oberlin Choristers: $25,000 toward staffing that supports the delivery of the highest quality choral music education and performance opportunities for children, youth, and their families

Oberlin Early Childhood Center (OECC): $20,000 toward the restoration of the existing outdoor Playscape, an area that provides enriching experiences and complements the Reggio Emilia inspired curriculum

Ohio Grantmakers Forum (OGF): $6,000 toward a two-year subscription to Family Philanthropy Online, providing monthly teleconferences, a knowledge resource center, discussion papers, books, and sample documents for those engaged in family philanthropy

Our Lady of the Wayside: $50,000 toward the establishment of a permanent endowment restricted toward the provision of high quality healthcare services for the organization's vulnerable clients

Pathways Counseling and Growth Center: $50,000 toward marketing/development and establishment of a reserve fund to support, grow, and sustain mental health services to low-income, uninsured, and underinsured persons in Lorain County

Scholastic Games: $4,000 toward Scholastic Games of Lorain County, a radio quiz show that airs weekly January through May, designed to highlight outstanding local students

South Lorain Community Development Corporation: $50,000 general operating support toward the acquisition and rehabilitation of forecloses properties

Town Hall of Cleveland: $4,000 toward the Student Scholarship Program, allowing Lorain County students to attend the Town Hall Lecture Series featuring renowned speakers on local, regional, national, and international topics

Vocational Guidance Services, Inc.: $56,272 toward capital improvements at the VGS Elyria Center, which provides rehabilitation services and enterprise activities for disabled, disadvantaged, or otherwise challenged adults

Women's Center of Greater Cleveland: $25,000 toward the Women's Campus Capital Campaign, which will increase client capacity, offer dual diagnosis treatment, and provide on-site, state-certified childcare services

Youth Challenge: $30,000 toward the establishment of the Beth K. Stocker Memorial Fund, a permanent scholarship capable of supporting one disadvantaged, disabled Lorain County youth annually in the Youth Challenge program, which provides necessary recreation and other activities to disabled youth who would otherwise be homebound while training high school youth as volunteers/mentors for disabled peers

Zion Community Development Corporation: $25,000 general operating support necessary to sustain programming for low-income residents of the Southeast Quadrant of Oberlin
