The Stocker Foundation Partners with Lorain City Schools to
Prepare Youngest Students for a Lifetime of Reading Success

Lorain, OH (September 2, 2010) – The Board of The Stocker Foundation awarded The Lorain City Schools $385,000 to strengthen preschool reading literacy programming during the 2010-2011 school year. Lorain City Schools (LCS) will utilize grant funds from The Stocker Foundation to provide literacy materials and support services to approximately 3,600 students (prekindergarten through fifth grade).

For the 2010-2011 school year, the district has been able to retain approximately 200 preschool students, which includes seven special education classrooms, three regular education or typical classrooms, and two language immersion classrooms. Therefore, the focus of this partnership between the district and The Stocker Foundation is to provide preschool students with a comprehensive literacy curriculum (i.e., Curiosity Corner/Success for All), extending learning opportunities during the summer, and access to increased technology that supports pre-reading skills. In addition, the district intends to serve 3,400 students in grades K‐5 via family literacy activities and book distributions to help build home libraries.
