    The Stocker Foundation Awards Grants in Nine
    Communities across the United States

    ELYRIA, OH (April 15, 2019) — The Board of The Stocker Foundation met on April 13, 2019, approving 54 grants totaling $1.4 million in support of nonprofit organizations working to lessen the reading achievement gap for public school students (PreK through third grade).     America Scores Cleveland: $20,000 in continued support of Jr. SCORES, a tri-curricular approach to building foundational reading skills of students (poet-athletes) and helping them stay on-track for reading proficiency by the end of third grade.

    Avon Local School District: $20,260 in continued support t of an afterschool intervention reading tutoring program developed to boost standardized test scores of struggling readers living in lower-income areas of the community.

    Boys & Girls Clubs of Lorain County: $125,000 (over two years) in continued support of SPARK, an in-school tutoring program designed to help struggling readers attending Lorain’s lowest performing elementary schools close the gap toward reading proficiency.

    Cleveland Hearing & Speech Center: $10,000 in support of Preschool Literacy and Language Classroom, a summer program where speech language pathologists provide specialized services focusing on the development of foundational reading skills at three full-day Head Start sites in Cuyahoga County.

    Cleveland Kids Book Bank: $10,000 towards Just like Me, a program designed to provide reluctant readers with brand new multicultural books to take home and keep.

    Family Connections of Northeast Ohio: $20,000 in continued support of Family School Connection (FSC), a comprehensive home- and school-based program designed to improve parent engagement and emerging literacy skills for kindergartners reading at a significantly lower level than their peers do.

    Neighborhood Alliance: $52,000 in continued support of early learning and kindergarten readiness programming for some of the most financially disadvantaged families in Elyria and Lorain (provision of preschool teachers)

    Oberlin School District: $17,775 in continued support of KinderCamp, a transitional summer day camp program designed to build foundational language and literacy skills of children entering kindergarten in the fall at Eastwood Elementary School.

    Save Our Children of Elyria: $35,040 in continued support of Summer Dreamers, a day camp meant to prevent reading regression through themed weeks based on learning and fun.

    Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Ohio: $45,000 in continued support of the Child Hunger Initiative designed to address food insecurity facing children and their families throughout Lorain County.

    Shoes and Clothes for Kids: $20,000 in continued support of promoting reading outside of the classroom through Cleveland Kids in Need Resource Center’s (CKIN) year-round book distribution events.

    University Circle: $15,000 in continued support of the Early Learning Initiative (ELI), a region- wide collaborative language and literacy program that supports joint instruction between urban preschool classrooms and cultural institution educators.

    Urban Community School: $15,000 in continued support of Leveled Literacy Intervention, an in- school literacy and language enrichment program for students most at-risk of reading failure.
